Local votes and rules

Atlanta City Council voted in June 2025 to bar data centers from some neighborhoods and to require developers to get a special use permit to build one.
π Data center rules Β· Union City
Union City council approved, in a split vote, adding data centers as a conditional use in its office-industrial zoning district, over many residents' objections. The city already allowed data centers in other districts, including Microsoft's large project.
π« Ban Β· Atlanta
Atlanta City Council banned new data centers in the BeltLine Overlay District, the area around the 22-mile BeltLine trail loop. Council members said data centers do not fit the walkable plans for the corridor and use a lot of power and water.
Find your town
In Georgia, cities and towns decide inside their limits. Outside them, the county decides.
