A company called Burr Computer Environments filed plans for a 2.1 million-square-foot data center on Stonewall Tell Road in Union City in 2024. The filing listed $240 million in value and about 50,000 gallons of water a day.

Union City council approved, in a split vote, adding data centers as a conditional use in its office-industrial zoning district, over many residents' objections. The city already allowed data centers in other districts, including Microsoft's large project.
