How we check facts

The short version: every fact on this site comes from a public record or a news report, and we link to it.

โœ” Confirmed vs. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ Reported

Confirmed means we found it in an official record (a government agenda, meeting minutes, a permit, a court filing) or in two separate trusted news reports. Reported means one news report or neighbors told us, and we haven't confirmed it yet.

๐Ÿ”— Sources

Every project page lists where each fact came from at the bottom. If we can't find a source, we leave it blank and list it under "Still unanswered."

๐Ÿ“… Last checked

Each page shows the date we last checked it. We re-check active projects regularly.

๐Ÿ“ Locations

When we know the exact site, the pin shows it. When we only know the town, the pin sits in the middle of the town and says so. Town and county borders come from the U.S. Census Bureau.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Reports from neighbors

We read every report before it goes on the site. Anything that names a person or company, or includes a photo, is checked by a person first. We never show your name, email or address.

๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ Aerial photos

In Pennsylvania, photos come from the state (PEMA, through Penn State's PASDA) and the U.S. Geological Survey. They are public. Aerial photos are taken every few years, so we always show the year. Newer satellite photos (less sharp, but every few days) are coming soon.

โšก "About as much as X homes"

An average U.S. home uses about 10,500 kilowatt-hours a year, or about 1.2 kilowatts at any moment. A data center runs all day, so 1 megawatt is roughly 800 homes.

โœ๏ธ Mistakes

If something is wrong, tell us. We fix mistakes quickly and keep a record of what we changed. Companies and officials can send us their side, and we will add it.

๐Ÿค Who pays for this site

Small donations from people who use it. No ads. No money from data center companies, utilities, or political campaigns.
