Local votes and rules
βΈοΈ Pause on new data centers Β· Brownsville
Brownsville city leaders backed a 90-day pause on new data center projects while the city finishes its rules. The pause still needed final votes by the Planning Commission and City Commission, expected in September 2026. It came days after a company dropped a plan to turn the former Southwest Key building on Padre Island Highway into a data center.
π Data center rules Β· Brownsville
Brownsville proposed data center rules. Data centers would be allowed only in Heavy Industrial zones with a special permit, must use closed-loop cooling, and must be at least one mile from homes, schools, hospitals, churches and other data centers.

In Texas, cities decide inside city limits. Outside cities, the county has the say, but Texas counties have very few zoning powers.
