Council passed a non-binding resolution 5-2 asking the city to look for good places for data centers, away from homes. It suggests land near Hawkins Field and the Jackson airport. The city attorney is writing a new data center ordinance.

Council voted 5-2 to pause data centers for 183 days. During the pause the city will not accept or approve permits, rezonings or building permits for data centers. City-owned land near the Jackson airport is left out. Because the vote was not unanimous, it took effect 30 days later. An earlier version was tabled on May 19.

Saxum Investment Group asked to rezone about 230 acres on Forest Avenue in northwest Jackson to light industrial for a possible data center. The Planning Board put off the vote until the city has data center rules. Council leaders said no data center will be approved until then.

Aldermen voted unanimously to define data centers in the zoning code, including crypto mining and AI centers. New data centers need a conditional use permit and are only allowed in the I-1 and I-2 industrial zones.

Aldermen approved a conditional use permit, a size variance and a deal to pay a set fee instead of regular property taxes (fee in lieu) for a $750 million data center in the former Delphi building at 1001 Industrial Park Drive. The company was not named at first; Amazon later said it will retrofit the building.
