The county planning commission recommended that supervisors deny a code change that would have allowed data centers in an industrial district (asked for by Rushmark Rockland Road LLC). The company then withdrew it and the August 18 supervisors' hearing was cancelled.

Town council voted 6-0 against a zoning change that would have allowed data centers in the I-2 industrial district. It told staff to draft, within 60 days, a ban on data centers in all zones and a temporary pause on applications.

After the council vote, the town put a 90-day pause on receiving data center applications while the planning commission drafts a ban. Lawyers say Virginia law gives such pauses limited force.
