American Tower data center near Reedy Creek Nature Preserve
American Tower wants to rezone 58 acres in east Charlotte for offices, telecom and a small data center of about 40,000 square feet on 10 acres. Thousands of neighbors signed a petition against it because the site borders homes and a nature preserve.

Charlotte City Council unanimously paused new data center applications for 150 days, until Nov. 5, 2026 or until new rules pass. A consultant and city team will study effects and propose rules. Projects already approved or in permitting can continue.
πΊοΈ Zoning change
Charlotte City Council approved rezoning 156 acres off Moores Chapel Road for a Digital Realty data center campus of up to about 3 million square feet. Because it was approved first, the 2026 city pause does not apply to it.
