The city sued two residents and their group to stop a citizen petition to block data centers. On Sept. 3, 2026 a judge threw out the case under the state law that protects public speech. A second lawsuit asks the court to put the petition on the ballot.

City council voted unanimously to override the planning commission and approve DAMAC's data center plans at Logistics Park Kansas City.

Residents filed a petition (208 valid signatures) for a city law blocking data centers. The council declined to adopt it on July 23, 2026. It is not yet clear if it will go to voters.
