Cottage Grove's Village Board unanimously paused data centers larger than 10,000 square feet for 12 months, or until new rules are adopted. The village will study energy, water, traffic and air effects. It can be extended six months.

Dane County paused zoning permits for very large (hyperscale) data centers for 18 months in towns that use county zoning. The county will study the effects and write rules. It does not cover cities, villages, or towns with their own zoning.

The Town of Westport unanimously passed a one-year pause on permits for data centers and telecom centers (Ordinance 26-01). No application was filed. Town staff had met in 2025 with MG&E and the developer Cloverleaf about a 57-acre site, which Cloverleaf found too small.

Madison paused zoning approvals for new data centers bigger than 10,000 square feet for up to one year, so the city can write data center rules. The vote was unanimous. It ends early once new rules are adopted.

The Town of Vienna rejected a $40 million agreement tied to QTS's planned $12 billion data center campus, which the Village of DeForest would have annexed. QTS paused the project in January 2026.
