A private owner wanted to allow a data center on an old industrial site on New Hook Road, next to a gas power plant. Residents fought it for months and it became an election issue. The city then banned data centers.

Bayonne's council voted 5-0 to ban data centers in every zone of the city (Ordinance O-26-74). The mayor signed it the next day. Three data centers already in the city were allowed to stay.
