TIP West data center (Eco TIP West)

Eco TIP West plans a 750-megawatt data center, including cryptocurrency mining, at the Moncure Megasite. The county paused data centers in February 2026, but a judge ruled in September that the project can go ahead. The county may have to pay the developer's costs.
Where things stand: County confirmed in Oct. 2025 that a data center is allowed by right. A judge ruled in Sept. 2026 that the county's pause cannot block it.

- Oct 29, 2025Chatham County issued a zoning permit saying a data center is allowed by right once water and sewer are available.
- Feb 11, 2026County commissioners adopted a 12-month pause on new data centers.
- May 2026Eco TIP West sued the county in Chatham County Superior Court, saying the pause cannot apply to its project.
- Sept 17, 2026Superior Court Judge John Morris ruled for the developer. Damages against the county will be decided later.
