Scannell Properties has a concept for four data center buildings, about 1.3 million square feet, on about 106 acres next to Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park. The city has not approved a project.

Monticello passed rules for data centers, 4-1. A data center needs a special planned development approval. Near homes it must be 300 feet away with full screening, or 700 feet without. Developers must pay for all needed roads, pipes and power.

The Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy sued Monticello and Monticello Tech over the environmental review for a data center campus of 3 to 5 million square feet.
