Local votes and rules
🗳️ Public vote · Janesville
Janesville voters will decide on November 3, 2026 whether big projects (over $450 million) at the old GM/JATCO site need voter approval. Residents put it on the ballot through a petition during the data center fight. The city ended data center talks with Viridian in June 2026.
🗳️ Election · Turtle
Town of Turtle voters recalled longtime town chair Roger Anclam. Donna Redner won 400 votes to his 232. The recall grew out of several local fights, including the debate over the Project Cornmaze data center and calls for a data center pause.
📌 Other · Rock County
A Rock County committee unanimously rejected a countywide data center pause. County lawyers said the county has no zoning power over the towns, so a county pause could not be enforced and could invite lawsuits. Towns decide land use in Rock County.
⏸️ Pause on new data centers · Janesville
The Town of Janesville approved a 12-month pause on data centers, a week after its planning committee recommended it at a packed public hearing. A San Diego company had asked in April about farmland at North Polzin Road and West Fenric Road. No application was filed.
⏸️ Pause on new data centers · Beloit
The Town of Beloit board voted 4-0 for a resolution calling for a 12-month pause on data center projects. It is the first of three steps: a public hearing and a final ordinance must follow.
✋ Turned down · Beloit
The towns of Turtle and Beloit both voted to reject a cost-sharing deal with Panattoni, the developer of the $1 billion Project Cornmaze data center. They also voted for a 12-month data center pause. The towns will now pay for their own zoning study.
⏸️ Pause on new data centers · Turtle
The Town of Turtle board passed a resolution for a 12-month data center pause, after rejecting a cost deal with the Project Cornmaze developer.
📌 Other · Beloit
The Town of Beloit decided town staff may not sign a secret deal (NDA) for a data center without the Town Board's approval. This came after a former town administrator signed one in 2025 for Project Cornmaze without the board knowing.
✋ Turned down · Janesville
Janesville's City Council voted unanimously to let its letter of intent with Viridian Acquisitions expire, ending talks on an $8 billion data center at the old GM plant site.
