Local votes and rules
π Data center rules
Kingsport's Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously passed, on first reading, rules that allow data centers and crypto mines only in heavy industrial zones with a special exception. They must be 500 feet from homes, fully enclosed, and stay under 60 decibels at the property line. A second vote is needed; we did not find its result.

β‘ Your electric company
Depending on where you live in Kingsport City: Kingsport Power Co. (company) or Appalachian Power Co. (company) or Johnson City (run by the town).
Big data centers need a lot of power. Who pays for new power lines depends on state rules. See the rules in Tennessee.
