📜 Data center rules
Provo's city council voted 5-1 to change its data center rules (Ordinance 2026-13). Data centers are capped at 50 megawatts, cannot make their own power on site, must use cooling that does not evaporate water, and cannot send water into the city sewer. Above 50 megawatts, the city power supplier would require on-site power, so in practice large data centers are kept out.

Provo's city council voted 7-0 against rezoning land at about 1507 South 180 East (East Bay) for a 66,000 sq ft data center by B+F Timpanogos Tech Center LLC. Council members said the city should finish its economic master plan first. The mayor also opposed it. On Feb 11, 2026 the city planning commission had recommended approval 5-2 (Data Center Overlay zone on land zoned PIC).
