- Feb 19, 2026Wilmington City Council voted 5-2 to rezone about 500 acres for an Ardent Technologies data center.
Local votes and rules
π³οΈ Public vote
Voters will decide four referendums that could strike down zoning ordinances the city passed for the planned Amazon Web Services data center. A separate citizen zoning ordinance was kept off the ballot by the county elections board, and its backers went to the Ohio Supreme Court.
πΊοΈ Zoning change
City council passed emergency rezoning that clears the way for a 1.9-million-square-foot Amazon Web Services data center on 471 acres along South U.S. 68. Emergency laws take effect right away and cannot be put to a referendum.
βοΈ Court case
A resident sued to overturn the 'emergency' rezoning for the Amazon data center, saying the emergency label was used to block a public vote.
β Turned down
City council re-passed the generator noise rule 6-1 as an emergency, but the rezoning for the Amazon Web Services data center failed because it needed at least 75% of the vote.
βοΈ Court case
A federal judge ruled that Wilmington did not give proper public notice before passing zoning, data center use and generator noise rules for a planned $4 billion Amazon Web Services data center. The city had to redo them before acting on the site plan.
