University of Michigan / Los Alamos computing center, Ypsilanti Township
Also called: U-M Los Alamos high-performance computing facility
The University of Michigan plans a $1.2 billion research computing center with Los Alamos National Laboratory on 144 acres on Textile Road. Township leaders say they will fight it. As a state university, U-M may not need township zoning approval.
Where things stand: U-M bought the land and confirmed the site in Aug. 2026. The township strongly opposes it. Groundbreaking is planned for 2027.
π Latest update (Aug 11, 2026): U-M confirmed the Textile Road site.

Local votes and rules
βΈοΈ Pause on new data centers
Ypsilanti Township paused new major electric utility equipment (the kind big data centers and AI centers need) for 180 days, and asked power companies to study noise and the effect on current customers.
βΈοΈ Pause on new data centers
The local water and sewer authority (YCUA) refused new water and sewer service to large data centers and AI computing centers for 12 months while it studies its system. It serves Ypsilanti Township, Augusta Township and other nearby towns.
π Other
Ypsilanti Township trustees unanimously asked the local water authority (YCUA) to stop serving data centers for at least 12 months until six studies are done. The board opposes the University of Michigan and Los Alamos data center planned in the township. The authority passed the pause a week later.
π Other
Washtenaw County commissioners passed a resolution praising towns that paused data centers and urging others to do the same. They also backed a state bill to take back $100 million in state money for the University of Michigan and Los Alamos data center.
π Data center rules
Ypsilanti Township trustees unanimously changed zoning so big data centers are allowed only as a special land use in industrial and 'commercial revitalization' zones, and nowhere else.
