Residents turned in 755 valid signatures (600 needed) for a vote on the M-3 data center zone. That paused the law. Instead of a ballot vote, the council voted 4-2 to repeal it.

🗺️ Zoning change

Mason City Council voted 5-2 to create a new 'M-3' technology zone for large data centers, with tighter noise and emissions limits and proof that water, sewer and power use won't hurt other users. Residents filed a referendum petition, and the council repealed it in March 2026.

⏸️ Pause on new data centers

Mason City Council voted 4-2 to pause data center approvals until mid-March while it finished new zoning rules. The pause ended when the rules passed in February.
