Local votes and rules
βΈοΈ Pause on new data centers
Louisville Metro Council voted 24-1 to pause new data centers for six months, or until it passes full zoning rules. Planners will not accept or process new data center plans. The council added a change so that turning an existing building into a data center is also paused.
π Data center rules
Louisville Metro is writing new zoning rules for data centers (case 25-LDC-0014). The June 2026 draft, revised in July, would ban the biggest data centers (over 500,000 square feet) and keep new ones in industrial areas. The Kentucky Resources Council says the draft lets many data centers up to 250,000 square feet be approved by staff with no public hearing. The Metro Council has not voted yet.
β Approved
Louisville's Planning Commission voted 6-1 to approve revised plans for a 1.6-million-square-foot data center on Camp Ground Road near Shively, by Poe Companies and PowerHouse Data Centers. The land was already zoned heavy industrial, so the Metro Council did not have to vote. More than 20 residents spoke against it over pollution, water and power.
