The council's Economic Development Committee voted 4-0 to recommend a one-year pause on building data centers. The full City Council was set to take it up next. It followed the governor's order that requires local approval for big data centers.

Town Meeting voters unanimously approved a one-year pause on data centers and battery storage systems. Town counsel warned the state Attorney General would likely reject the battery part, but the data center part would likely be approved.

Voters approved a pause on new data centers by 48 to 16 at a Special Town Meeting. The pause ran until June 20, 2026, to give the Planning Board time to write rules. The same vote also listed data centers as not allowed in all four zoning districts. The state Attorney General approved it in January 2026.
