🚫 Ban

The city council approved a change to city code that bans large data centers over 5,000 square feet inside Sandpoint. Before this, data centers were allowed in one industrial zone east of the airport. The council asked for the ban on July 15. The city planning commission voted against the draft on Aug. 18, calling the size limit too small, but the council went ahead.

πŸ“Œ Other

The planning commission voted unanimously to recommend against the city's draft data center rules. Members said the 5,000-square-foot size limit was too small and unclear, and could hurt small tech firms. The question went back to the city council.

⚑ Your electric company

Depending on where you live in Sandpoint City: Bonneville Power Administration (public) or Avista Corp. (company) or Northern Lights, Inc. (co-op (owned by its members)).

Big data centers need a lot of power. Who pays for new power lines depends on state rules. See the rules in Idaho.
