The county zoning commission unanimously recommended a six-month pause on applications for large data centers, AI computing sites and crypto mining, and supervisors planned to vote on it as a resolution on September 23, 2026. It would run until March 23, 2027 and could be extended 60 days. The commission plans to draft a data center ordinance by early 2027.

After first voting a pause down 4-3 in June, Marshalltown's council passed a four-month pause on data centers by ordinance. It took effect when published on August 27 and ends November 23. The planning commission will draft data center rules meanwhile.
